What is the Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant?

The Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant is The Sunset Project's lead creative development program, focused on supporting Northeast Michigan youth aged 16-23 through structured mentorship and program-directed purchases of goods or services.

Named in honor of the late Sawyer J. Boyd, this program aims to change how young creatives across our service region receive the personal mentorship, professional guidance, and financial support they need to continue pursuing their unique passions and interests.

Who was Sawyer j. Boyd?

Sawyer J. Boyd was an exceptional Northeast Michigan creative whose unique vision and passion were evident in everything he put his mind to.

Tragically, Sawyer took his own life in the Fall of 2016, leaving behind only the memories of his creative work. Through the Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant, The Sunset Project hopes to keep his vision alive and channel it into a driving force for the betterment of Northeast Michigan's creative youth.

What Makes This Program Unique?

Beyond program-directed funding, the Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant offers long-term mentorship and guidance to support individuals as they develop professional artistic practices within their chosen creative fields.

Once selected, our program team establishes a cadence of individualized meetings to guide recipients on how best to utilize an influx of funding. We then use professional recommendations, collaborative research, and input from recipients to purchase goods or hire services that best fit their needs. After purchases have been made, our team continues to connect with recipients for up to six months post award, ensuring they receive the best possible opportunities to further their pursuits.

We believe this method of development is the most effective way to expand Northeast Michigan's growing creative community and ensure future generations have equitable access to the support they need.

What creative pursuits are Eligible for support?

The Sunset Project does not limit what pursuits are eligible for program support, and encourages anyone who meets our eligibility requirements to apply. Previously supported pursuits include film, photography, graphic design, authorship, UI/UX development, dance, and more.
