Alpena, MI - May, 2022
"Keep your eyes toward tomorrow. Allow your heart to honor your past. Live in the moment. Breathe like you love yourself.”
Rick Houchin is an Alpena area resident with a strong passion for great photography.
Originally from Ohio, he was transferred to Alpena in 2006 while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Falling in love with the region during his time serving, he decided to stay permanently when he retired, and now calls Ossineke home where he lives with his wife Meag and their dog Gracie. A Volunteer Coordinator for the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency and owner of Rick Houchin Photography, his days are jam-packed doing what he loves.
Rick first began his photography journey at the urging of his therapist in 2016. Struggling personally with depression and frequent bouts of anxiety, photography became one way to safely express his feelings and emotions by helping to quiet his own negative thoughts. Now, capturing moments in time and portraying emotions through pictures is still how he expresses his feelings and hopes to stir the emotions in others.
A creative at heart, Rick’s love for photography continues to grow. He can often be found with a camera in hand, taking pictures of beautiful landscapes on his travels where he is most drawn to the night sky or early morning sunrise. He enjoys expanding his boundaries in photography by shooting events, unique creative portraits, and helping new or aspiring photographers find their creative passion.
“When you pick up a camera, you instantly start to view the world differently. Colors and contours take on new meanings. Light and lines start to jump out to you as never before. You see the world in a whole new way. We can all become photographers. We can all become artists. You just have to start.”
Rick’s work can be found at various local shops such as The Art in the Loft, and Cedar & Threads. If you would like to reach out to Rick or Rick Houchin Photography, you can do so at rickhouchinphotography@gmail.com!
Some fun things about Rick:
● Always looking for his next adventure
● Mesmerized by light and lines
● In addition to photography, he loves working out, painting, looking at the stars, telling stories, writing, coffee, and most of all, people who make him smile.
