Last month, The Sunset Project was honored to announce Maddie Linton of Alpena, Michigan as one of six Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant Recipients for 2024!
After the awards ceremony, we sat down with Maddie to discuss her unique story, why she applied, and what she hopes to utilize her funding for!
Can you introduce yourself quickly to those who may not know you already?
My name is Madison Linton, I'm from Alpena, Michigan, and my creative passions lie in graphic design and dance. Through my work, I aim to bring ideas to life, whether on a screen or the dance floor, blending creativity and self-expression in everything I do.
How would you describe your creative pursuit to someone unfamiliar with it?
My creative pursuit of dance is the physical representation of experiences through the artistry of performing. As for Graphic design, it is using design elements and the history of art movements to create well-educated and creative concepts through digital platforms.
What or who inspired you to pursue a career in this space?
Amanda Pilarski, my former teacher, has been a constant source of inspiration, always encouraging me to chase my dreams. Her guidance gave me someone to look up to and without her support, I wouldn't have taken the steps that have brought me to where I am today and where I'm headed in the future.
Can you share a memorable experience or milestone from your creative journey?
My most memorable experience from my creative journey would be seeing how willing people are to support young and up-and-coming artists. I’ve gained many creative opportunities through business owners being open to supporting young artists.
How have challenges or setbacks shaped your approach and vision?
Setbacks have shaped my approach by just challenging myself to find ways to still get it done. Creating is always possible and finding inspiration is always possible, sometimes you just must get more creative when going about it.
How do you envision your creative passion evolving over the next year?
I see my passion evolving as I push myself in new directions—both in pursuing advanced dance studies and in building a strong portfolio to apply to graphic design school. My goal is to have a well-rounded portfolio by next year that I can use to help land an internship or other opportunities.
How do you plan to utilize your grant funding to further your creative journey?
I plan to use my funding to help purchase a MacBook, which will give me full access to the programs I need to keep pursuing my passions. This investment will not only enhance my ability to create but also enable me to learn more advanced software, giving me an advantage in the future.
What advice or message would you share with someone looking to pursue their own creative dreams?
Never let fear or the doubts of others stand in the way of your creativity. The pursuit of what makes you happy and fulfilled is worth more than any hesitation or outside opinion.
